"It's time to play the music! It's time to light the lights!" The Muppets Show is coming back!

In news to be filed under "What the hell took them so long?!", The Hollywood Reporter writes that Disney's ABC network is developing a reboot of The Muppet Show to be sheparded by Bill Brady, co-creator of The Big Bang Theory.

There have been two Muppet feature films released theatrically since Disney acquired the rights to Jim Henson's creations in 2004, along with a Christmas TV special and webisodes, but it's surprising it's taken Disney this long to develop a new TV series.

The Muppets' unique brand of anarchic comedy has always worked best in a variety show format, where our favourite felt comedy troupe perform musical numbers, sketches, stunts, and harass a host of A-list celebrities. The best part of Disney's 2011 "The Muppets" was the finale, where we were treated to what was more or less a brand new episode of Jim Henson's variety show.

Brady started his career working for Henson in 1982, and went on to become a writer on The Jim Henson Hour, so the revival would appear to be in safe hands.

The pilot is set to go into production very soon, so expect this to air late this year or early next.

What do you guys think? Looking forward to a brand new series of The Muppet Show, or do you think without Jim Henson it will be The Muppet Show in name only? I enjoyed the last two movies, so I have faith that Disney can do right by Kermit, Ms Piggy, Gonzo and co.
