Animated Spider-Man Movie Slinging Our Way In 2018! Plus Casting News...

Among the revelations leaked after cybercriminals hacked into Sony's computer systems last November was news that Sony was in negotiations to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Captain America. We now know those negotiations were successful and that a recast Spiderman will be making his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War next year.

In all the excitment surrounding this news what seems to have been forgotten is the leak also revealed plans for a Spider-Man animated feature film to be masterminded by The Lego Movie, 21/22 Jump Street and Clone High directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Well it's now been confirmed by the chairman of Sony Pictures at CinemaCon that this project is going ahead, and we will see the new Spider-Man animated franchise kick off on July 20, 2018.

This will be a first, as these new films with exist alongside the rebooted rebooted live action series which kicks of with The Spectacular Spiderman on July 28, 2017.

On the one hand this is awesome news, as I always thought Spider-Man would make an awesome animated movie in the vein of The Incredibles or last years Big Hero Six, and Lord and Miller's involvement convinces me this is going to be the best motion picture version of the web slinging hero we've seen yet. At the very least they'll get Peter Parker's sense of humour right, unlike Raimi's ugly-crying sour puss and Webb's obnoxiously smug skateboarding git.

On the other hand, between two ongoing big screen series, not to mention the superhero's appearances in other Marvel films, we could be looking at too much of a good thing, and I suspect Lord and Miller's Spidey will be so mind blowingly awesome it will make his live action incarnation look dull and lifeless in comparison.

I think it would be a much cooler idea if Sony went ahead with this, but limited the live action version of Spidey to appearances in Avengers and other team up movies, or alternatively, have the cartoon follow the adventures of Peter Parker's successer, Miles Morales.

What do you guys think? Looking forward to at least one or two Spider-Man films a year on top of any team ups or cameos Marvel has planned? Let us know in the talkbacks below.

In other Spider-Man related news, The Wrap is reporting the fresh faced young fellas below are on the shortlist to play Parker in the upcoming live action movie. Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars), Asa Butterfield (Ender's Game), Tom Holland (The Impossible), Timothee Chalamet (Homeland)  and Liam James (The Way, Way Back). It'll be interesting to see if whoever lands the role will end up voicing the character in the animated movie. Let us know what you think (I'm rooting for Asa Butterfield. He's proven himself capable as a lead in a big budget blockbuster, where as Ender Wiggin he portrayed charisma, wit and an intelligence beyond his years.)
