ROBOT OVERLORDS

If you go to Robot Overlords expecting Transformers you're going to be sorely disappointed, the film has much more in common with an episode of Doctor Who, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Much like one of the Timelord's TV adventures, the fx are ropey, the humour sometimes groan inducing, but this all somehow adds to its charm. It's certainly more wholesome family entertainment than any of Michael Bay's strangley perverted and vulger bot-busters.

It's good to see Gillian Anderson fighting aliens again, and Ben Kinsley can play the bad guy in his sleep at this stage, and the kid cast are all very likeable.

The robots look slick, especially the giant humanoids, but they lack variety. There are only three different models so the action scenes soon become repetitive. I also can't help feeling there's a much better film to be made based on this intriguing premise (giant robots invade Earth and impose martial law, forcing people to remain in their homes indefinitely without explaination).

Robot Overlords has shiny robots, a likeable cast, and a great premise. It probably cost less than a single Transformers movie's coffee budget to make, but is infinitely more entertaining.

If you want to get your evil A.I fix before The Avengers battle Ultron at the end of the month, Robot Overlords is in cinemas now.
