Mad Mad: Fury Road Review

George Miller had a famously difficult time bringing Fury Road to the big screen and one wonders, if he hadn't, would he have still made the best action movie of all time.

The film is painstakingly crafted and choreographed to such perfection that every action set piece has you waiting with baited breath for the next. Never before has such a jumble of action paced itself so fluidly over the course of its running time. Everything here works, from the otherworldly lighting of the night sky to the fetishistic dress sense of its villains.

Miller’s well-developed, yet historically ambiguous, world is full of original creativity which he has only expanded on during Max’s 30 year absence. Its main players give their absolute best to amplify this, through their ever-evolving chemistry on screen.

Tom Hardy is the titular protagonist and shines throughout, but it is Charlize Theron who is the real star here. Her Imperator Furiosa has claimed her place atop the list of iconic action characters with a weighted and driven performance. Nicholas Hoult gives a career best as the comedic and layered Nux, acting as an emphatic device between good and evil.

The score compliments the action and there are actually noteworthy musical moments here. The overall design of the film warrants scenes being paused just to admire their beauty.

Miller’s perfectionism here was worth the wait, and hopefully this reboot will bloom into a franchise of its own. Action cinema has truly been revolutionised.
