Child 44 Review
Child 44 isn’t a bad movie but it certainly isn’t a great one either. Based on the award winning book by Tom Rob Smith, the film struggles in its second half as it gets swallowed by clichés and unnecessary theatrics. The film's central plot is interesting but the story strays from it so much that the end result seems to be somewhat of an afterthought.
Tom Hardy is superb as disgraced MGB agent Leo Demidov. With such an articulated and emotional performance Hardy draws sympathy and admiration boosting him further up the ranks of the acting elite.
Noomi Rapace plays Leo’s unhappy wife Raisa who starts off with a stellar performance but falls by the wayside along with the films plot. Another victim of this is Joel Kinnaman who plays two entirely different characters within one role, wounded puppy and 90’s bond villain.
Gary Oldman’s General Nesterov is good but his dwindling Russian accent makes you wonder why he even bothered to have one at all. Jason Clarke has a small but important role displaying what it means to be on the wrong side of the law in 50’s Russia. Both Vincent Cassel and Charles Dance are adequate but underused.
The film’s director Daniel Espinosa does a fantastic job in recreating a tense post-war Russia but the later descent into cheap action doesn't suit his camera work. The score by Jon Ekstrand is excessive and cheapens otherwise emotional scenes.
Overall Child 44 is a misfire with good intentions that becomes a dated mess in its final act. The movie was banned in Russia due to claims of historical inaccuracies and hopefully one day a more poignant film will hit that nerve again.
