Domhnall Gleeson Being Considered
For Role Of Villain In The Fantastic Four
A couple of weeks ago, after much rumour and fan boy speculation, the cast of the titular superhero team in Josh Trank’s 2015 Fantastic Four reboot was finally revealed. An Awkward Moment co-stars Miles Teller and Michael B Jordon are lined up to play Mr Fantastic and The Human Torch respectively (Jordon also appeared in Trank’s Chronicle 2012). Kate Mara (House Of Cards, Transcendence) will be The Invisible Girl, and Jamie Bell (Nymphomaniac Pt2) will be clobbering up the scenery as The Thing. This version of Ben Grimm will be realized using motion capture technology, so the fact that Bell isn’t exactly a physical fit for the role shouldn’t really matter. The actor has donned a leotard and ping pong balls once before for Spielberg’s The Adventure Of Tintin, which no doubt had something to do with him winning the part.
Now that our heroes have been assembled, it’s time to turn our attention to who will be taking on the role of their arch nemesis. The Wrap is reporting that Domhnal Gleeson (In Time), Sam Riley (Control), Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserable) and Toby Kebbel (The East) are the four actors in contention. We guessed they would be looking for young, talented actors for the role, seeing as they sought younger actors for our heroes, and Victor Von Doom is supposed to be of a similar age to Richard Reed aka Mr Fantastic, having once been his academic rival in college.
There was a rumour going around that this incarnation of Doctor Doom would be female, which is obviously no longer the case, if it ever was (Unless one of these guys is in fact playing a female Doctor Doom. There is precedent. Linda Hunt convincingly swapped genders in The Year Of Living Dangerously, and this is a movie starring a dude with stretching powers and a giant orange rock monster, so why not have a guy play a female villain that was originally a guy in the comic books?).
Naturally, we here at All About Film will be rooting for Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson to land the role, and, of course, hoping the film isn’t a giant piece of crap and his association with it ruins his career.
The Fantastic Four will be in cinemas sometime next year.
